Wal-Mart for Fun.
One of my co-workers on this assignment in Idaho Falls is from South Africa. He’s on the second to last week of his 3-month stint in the States, and then he’ll be heading off to the UK with his wife in search of a new job in finance.
An interesting fellow. It’s been difficult spending all this time with him. Since we’re the only two on the team from out of town, we’re eating a lot of meals together. Lots of sitting down, staring at the food, bringing up topics about the differences between South Africa and the States, and more staring at the food. Cool guy though. He’s a huge music fan – picked SF for his assignment because Metallica is from around there.
Unfortunately, I’m just not the talkative type around certain people. Stupid shy self – not much of a conversation starter. I’m pretty good at listening when others have much to say, but he seems rather quiet also.
Anyway, as part of our cultural sharing, we went to Wal-Mart. He’d never been in one, PLUS we needed to pick up some water, so we drove over after dinner and spent half an hour or so wandering around it. He was amazed. I was amused. It’s a superstore that I don’t mind not having in SF, but it’s also pretty convenient when traveling.
