House Hunt

02.23.2009 · Posted in 101 in 1001, Random

Yesterday after going out for dim sum with some friends, RV and I went house-hunting. Well, not really… Neither of us is looking to buy at the moment, but we did check out a few open houses on our way back to his apartment. It’s interesting to see what’s on the market these days. It seems that a lot of people are selling, probably due to the bad economy. Not sure how many people are out there buying though… I can only imagine that the prices will drop within the next few months. If I can manage to save something up, it wouldn’t be such a bad time to look around.

The first one we looked at was a single home on a ridiculously large plot of land. Most of the neighbors had done some sort of work to extend their properties out to their backyards. The backyard of this place was probably the length of the house, so plenty of room for expansion. The appliances and cabinets were outdated, and the house, while livable, was a fixer-upper. The price surprised us a bit as it wasn’t as high as we’d thought. But considering that we still can’t afford it, it makes very little difference what the price is.

The second was a tenant-in-common that had just been approved to become a condo. Very nice place. It was pretty much ready for move-in. One bedroom and one bath with a living room AND a dining room. Another one of the outer neighborhoods of the city, but still a great area… Apparently someone had put an offer on it already, but they didn’t meet some of the terms, so it was back on the market. *sigh* I’d totally get it if I had the $!

The third was the closest one to RV’s current apartment. Also very nice and ready for move-in. Two bedrooms that should really have been one and a family room or study. New kitchen with a deep sink. Beautiful bathroom with a rain shower head. What can I say? I’m easily impressed. For the amount of space compared to the other two, it was more expensive, but still less than other neighborhoods in the city.

I’d really love to work on Task “ #70: Buy another house.” some day. Not at the moment, but it doesn’t hurt to look to get an idea of what’s out there and what I want. Perhaps I’ll find something amazing and be inspired to work harder!

@Lauren: We were in the Richmond for dim sum, so the first two were out there. The third one was at Fulton/Divisadero!

There’s definitely some bargains out there with the economic situation. We’re quite happy where we are at the moment, I don’t think we’ll be moving for another 2-3 years.
