Jetting All I Can

The flights are booked. It was not difficult at all. I did searches for my flights online and then called Jet Blue with my requests. I didn’t have to wait long each time, except for the most recent itinerary change. Must’ve gotten popular! Had a few changes to make, but cancellation was an easy process too. My accommodations have, for the most part, been figured out. Thanks to my friends who’ll be hosting over the course of the month. I can’t wait to see you guys!

Here’s the plan:
09/08-09/11 – AUSTIN
09/14-09/14 – ORLANDO [w/ #12hrs]
09/14-09/18 – BURLINGTON* [w/ #12hrs] / MONTREAL*
09/18-09/22 – WASHINGTON DC
09/22-09/25 – NEW YORK CITY
09/25-09/29 – CHICAGO* / MILWAUKEE*
09/29-10/02 – BUFFALO* / NIAGARA FALLS* / TORONTO*
10/04-10/07 – BOSTON*

* = never been! Suggestions on what not to miss at these destinations? I’d love to hear ‘em!

I’ve gotten mixed responses from people. Most are excited about this opportunity for me and have basically expressed that they’d go if they had the time. I’ve got the time, so I’m doing it. Then there are those who send me links to various online articles about whether or not this is really a deal. I’ve read ‘em all. It IS a deal for me. I get to visit the people I’ve been meaning to see, go to the places I’ve been wanting to go. Sticking to the domestic destinations still puts me way over the cost of the flights and the cost of making reservations over phone. Jet Blue has a separate department handling these All-You-Can-Jet passes. By the way, passes are all sold out!

Besides, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of such a deal. Cathay Pacific has an All-Asia Pass during the summer months where you can jet around its Asian destinations for a set price. I’d do that if I didn’t think I would want to spend at least a few weeks in each location! I’m the girl who spent her entire 3-week vacation in one country rather than move across a handful in that time. I travel to experience and to absorb. Perhaps I am just a slow sponge…

And of course, my plan of action is not as crazy as others out there. There’s the guy who is traveling to 10 flights within 60 hours [Source: Time.Com]. He’ll go from airport to airport and only spend time touching the ground of Portland. I’m not sure that’s the best way to go about making use of the deal if you can’t even experience the cities you’re traveling to.

Then there’s Joe and Clark who went so far as to set up Twelve Hours in A City – 31 Days of Jet Travel, 12 Hours between Flights. They’re going all out with a site, sponsors, and swag. That’s a little more manageable, in my opinion. Since I have a few gaps [mainly 09/12-09/17], I might look into plan on meeting up with Joe and Clark for part of their travels!, depending on if the time matches up. There’s a bunch of others taking advantage of the deal – many of whom are tracking their whereabouts at WhereWeJet.

  3. Suggest you check my yelp reviews for Chicago – http://www.yelp.com/user_details_reviews_self?u...

But, you really should at the very least get yourself an Italian Beef sandwich while you're there – portillo's or al's are good choices. If you want to try something even more insane, get a jibarito. If you want nicer food, I highly recommend Avec, but realize there will be a wait :/ OR, if you can get there early, you can sit at the bar at Frontera Grill and order off of both their and Topolobampo's menus!

Oh, and in Boston, the Mapparium!

Have fun…you'll be in NYC the week after we leave. :)

  5. Thanks for the suggestions, Neil! I'll definitely be reading your Yelp reviews to get an idea of what to do. Luckily, in Chicago I'll have some friends showing me around, so I won't be wandering around aimlessly. ;) Same with Boston. Going to visit Grace!

  6. Sweeet! Bookmarking those for reference. Thanks, Arnold. That hot chocolate place sounds yummy. I hope I have enough time and stomach space for all those!

  7. Have fun! If you were going to Hawaii I could make recommendations, but I've never been to any of those other states, haha. Hmm, I need to travel more.

  8. That's awesome. Travel is something that everyone should do and not nearly enough people do it. It gives perspective, space, and experiences. Live it up, take pictures, and enjoy yourself. :)

For Boston, I love Faneuil Hall.

  10. I am so jealous! Have such an amazing time. I'm not too familiar with any of the places so I don't have any suggestions :(

  11. Are you driving from Chicago to Milwaukee? Stop by the Mars Cheese Castle. Or, at the very least, get some cheese curd somewhere. SQUEAK!

  12. They seriously need more routes on the West Coast. ;)

  13. Yes, a friend of mine in Milwaukee's picking me up! We'll head back to Chicago over the weekend, so I'm sure there will be some cheesin' along the way. :)

in montreal, schwartz's deli and a smoked meat sandwich is a must. if you get a chance, go to china town and see if they have any mangosteens (not mangos) — good ones taste like a cross between the best orange and the best grape you've ever eaten … for possible citrus pestilence reasons they're not available fresh in the US.

at niagra falls, ride “maid of the mist.” goes right into the bottom of the waterfall. just a little bit of cheesey, a whole lot of thrilling and you get to keep the flimsy poncho as a great keepsake.

in VT, if possible, break away from the 12 hours jokers (or convince them to tag along) and go to waterbury to tour the ben and jerry's factory. tasty and fun.

in chicago eat at lou malnati's pizza. it will make you re-think the way you view pizza (and possibly casserole).

in boston, have clam chowder at the fairmont copley plaza … they serve the same chowder at the bar that they do in the restaurant — you can just eat it in there and save an over-priced and otherwise lackluster meal.

toronto island park will be ideal in shoulder season. it's easy to mass transit/ferry there.

Oh, lovely. I agree with redelvis that you should go to the B&J factory, and while in Waterbury, there is a great brew pub called the Alchemist!

As for Burlington, there is little to see outside of downtown (unless you want to go to my parents' house), but while there, you could check out the following:

Church Street is the pedestrian shopping district with lots of boutiquey shops, restaurants and bars, as well as city hall, and the Firehouse Gallery, a city-run art space right next door to city hall. If you are there on a Saturday, there is a great farmers market in City Hall Park, which also includes an artists' fair featuring some great local artists and craftspeople. There are also many nightlife options on Church St. with a lot of the bars and restaurants setting up outdoor seating after dark.

A block down College St. from Church, there are 2 great eateries, each of which brews their own beer. American Flatbread is a wood-fired oven pizzeria, and VT Pub & Brewery has great pub fare. On the topic of beer, there is also a great brewery tour at the Magic Hat Brewery in South Burlington.

The Burlington Waterfront extends from Battery Park in the north down to Perkin's Pier to the South, a distance that can be easily walked in 10-15 minutes. Beansie's bus sells tasty fries and burgers out of the park, and along the way, you can check out the Burlington Boathouse and The Echo Lake Aquarium and Science Center, which is targeted at kids, but is a lot of fun for those of us who refuse to grow up (If you like the Exploritorium…).

  18. mquinnsweeney says:

Oh, almost forgot Penny Cluse Cafe (http://pennycluse.com). Just a block off Church street, this place is the best in town for breakfast (served all day) or lunch. The menu is essentially the same as Boogaloos, because, as I heard it, the owner of Penny Cluse designed the menu while he worked at Boogaloos, then moved to VT and opened up shop. The difference is that the food at Penny Cluse is roughly 20 times better than Boogaloos and you don't need to wait for 2 hours in a crowd of Mission hipsters.
