Los Angeles – Canals and Alter Egos

04.26.2009 · Posted in Around California, Photos

On day number two, RV and I headed for the canals of Venice after a brief stop for lunch at a Burmese market/eatery for lunch. I’ve always loved the area because of the unique houses and gorgeous canals. It hasn’t changed very much since I was in the area last, except maybe a few extra “For Sale” signs.

After a scroll around the canals, we headed for Venice Beach. It was much too windy, and there were too many people trying to peddle their goods along the walkway, so we got out of there. It was quite the feat to find a bathroom that wasn’t one of the public ones at the beach. We found ourselves at Seed. No bathrooms for customer use there, but we did fill our bellies with a vegan cupcake and an iced coffee [Yeah, we ordered a beverage despite our original task at hand - to find a toilet!].

The joint birthday party for Jen, Neil, and James was in the evening. The theme was Alter Egos, and all guests picked name tags on the way in. All the names had been pre-determined, which was part of the fun. You didn’t know who you would become until the party. I ended up with “Dorah,” and RV was “Gabriel” for the evening.

Good times, but I think it got a little frustrating for some people who didn’t know very many people, and all they had was a fake name! There were some pretty awful names in the mix too, including “Edna,” “Grizelda,” “Eustace,” “Archibald,” etc. I guess it was better being referred to as “The Explorah” the entire time. There was someone named “Norah” there also.

By the end of the party, I had decided to sift through the name box for something a little more crazy and ended up with “Apollonia,” except I pronounced the “pollo” portion like chicken in Spanish!

So nice to catch up with everyone in LA, as well as meet the new faces. Kristen made the cakes – aren’t they AWESOME?

Birthday Surprise (Not really a Fail)

It was a friend’s birthday the other day, but I had heard from someone at the Orange Photography party that she was having a rough time with the boyfriend. He was being difficult at a time when she’d expected something else. So anyway, we were both going to a party last night, so I wanted to surprise her with a cake or something. Of course, by the time I got to the store to buy a cake, it was closed. I ran across the street and bought an ice cream pie instead.

In the process of presenting the surprise birthday pie to her, we managed to first spill a cranberry vodka or a pomegranate martini all over the front of her skirt, AND then we also somehow set the box that the pie was in on FIRE…

It was quite the sight.

Still, it worked out in the end. The pie was presented. A birthday song was sung. I hope she had a good night.

Hot x 2

Saturday was hotter than hot, as expected. I was sweating, my sweat was sweating, and the clothes I was wearing were sweating as well. It was a great time though. I really enjoyed the music, and the acoustic version of Festizio [Yes, it's another plug for them. Go listen to their music!] was pretty awesome. Afterwards, two birthday parties. The first stop was at Al’s… As expected, it was like a frat party. After making our appearances and drinking their booze, we headed down to Jessica’s karaoke birthday party. Lots of fun. I think I woke up the next day with a sore throat from singing along to everything.

Today, met up with friends for coffee in the morning, watched Lunatique Fantastique, wandered into X21 Modern, 826 Valencia and Paxton Gate, and then laid out in the sun at the park with JM. We were there for HOURS. Dinner was mellow too. We swung by his friend’s place afterward because he’d left his bag there, and somewhere in conversation we had mentioned that he’d met a lot of my friends, and I’d only met his roommate. So there it was – I met two friends of his.

How long does one wait to introduce the person to friends? I didn’t wait all that long. Oops.

Anyway, I love weekends.

So sad to be heading back to the grind. Work’s super busy lately.

Stinky Breath

This whole healing process STINKS. My breath stinks. It’s toxic! Smells like something went ahead and died in my mouth. So I’ve been brushing the teeth a LOT, drinking more water, taking chlorophyll pills because I can’t find parsley ones, spraying myself with breath freshener, bought those little ice burst crystals. I hope it goes away when I’m all healed up because this is not only disgusting, it’s freakin’ embarrassing. Thought I’d share it with the rest of the blog world. YAY!

In other news, I spent Labor Day in a daze. I’m really losing my mind because aside from names escaping me, entire weekends of activities seem to disappear as well. Saturday, I went to a birthday/Filipino cooking party during the day, and then a barbeque/house party at night. Sunday was spent R&Ring in Foster City, followed by a little shopping, a Korean dinner, and then late night karaoke. Monday was family time, mostly. We went to a dim sum place, and I had to act like Little Miss Priss and ask for a fork and knife to cut up all the dumplings into little pieces.
